Men's Health

Our bodies are regulated by numerous chemicals known as hormones. Hormones are released and act upon various parts of our bodies. They can alter the way our bodies function or how we feel in response to various stimuli. An imbalance of any hormone can lead to physiological and psychological changes. These changes can drastically alter an individual’s health status and quality of life. Correcting hormone imbalances are important in order to allow an individual to function and feel normal.

A gradual decrease in sex hormones, especially androgen, commonly associated with aging is referred to as male menopause or andropause. Androgen deficiencies can impair quality of life and lead to various health problems if left untreated. Nearly five million men in the United States experience androgen deficiencies which impair quality of life in various ways. Generally there is a 1.2% decrease in free testosterone levels starting at about the age of 40. Over the age of 60, nearly 50% of men fall below the normal free testosterone range

Physical signs and symptoms of decreased androgen include a higher pitched voice, anemia, Ødecreased beard growth, change in erection, ejaculation, and or sexual dysfunction, decreased muscle mass, and visceral obesity (increased fat, especially around chest and or abdomen). Psychological signs and symptoms of decreased androgen include decreased libido (sexual desire), Ødecreased cognitive function, Ødepression, Ølow sense of well-being, Ømood changes, irritability, loss of motivation Øand lethargy, which is a continuous feeling of tiredness. Long term androgen deficiency can also lead to osteoporosis, increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, and increased risk of type II diabetes.
